The Forth Bridge and the places that feel like home

Published October 15, 2026

Sometimes it is a grand landmark. Sometimes it is the street where you grew up, the local park or the view from the train window. Britain is full of places that hold our stories. Which view tells you that you are home?

The Forth Bridge is shown here at sunset in a photograph from 2007. A landmark can mean much more than its history or engineering. For someone travelling home, it might mark the point where a familiar landscape begins. For someone else, it might belong to a childhood day out.

Your own landmark matters too

Not every meaningful view is famous. A railway bridge, a row of houses, the gates of a factory or a local park can hold just as many memories. A photograph becomes more useful when there is a place and a little context attached: what you called it, who you were with and roughly when the memory belongs. You do not need to know an exact date. “Around 1975” or “when I was at primary school” can be enough to start a conversation.

What do you remember?

  • Which view makes you feel that you are home?
  • Do you remember a journey across or beside the Forth?
  • What ordinary local place deserves a spot in the album?
