A windbreak, a packed lunch and a brave first paddle in the sea. We did not need perfect weather to make a day of it. From the south coast to Scottish shores, the best bit was being there together.

These Brighton beach huts were photographed in 2018. They are a reminder of a seaside tradition that connects different generations, rather than an archive picture from one particular childhood. Your own memories might belong to a very different stretch of coast.
A day out did not need perfect weather
Sometimes the windbreak was as important as the towel. A flask, a sandwich and an extra jumper could turn a chilly day into a family outing worth remembering. Other visits meant long afternoons in the sunshine, a fairground ride or a last walk along the front before heading home. Britain’s coast holds many different stories, from Scottish beaches and Welsh bays to English piers. Tell us the place as well as the memory: another visitor may remember the same hut, café or stretch of sand.
