A road atlas on someone’s knees, a flask packed for the journey, and the same question from the back seat: are we nearly there yet? The family car was part of the holiday. What was parked outside your house?
The red Mini Clubman in this photograph dates from 1970 and was photographed at a transport show in 2011. A preserved car can bring back the details that disappear from ordinary family photographs: the shape of a window, a familiar dashboard or the way luggage had to be fitted around the passengers.
The journey was part of the story
A first car might mean freedom, a new job or a long drive to see family. A family car might bring back very different memories: arguments over the window, a picnic beside the road or a favourite cassette played again and again. Britain’s motoring memories go far beyond one model. Minis, Escorts, Cortinas, Marinas and many others all have a place in the album. Tell us what made your particular car memorable rather than worrying about whether it was rare or valuable.
What do you remember?
- What was your first car or your family’s car?
- Where did you travel in it?
- Which small detail do you remember most clearly?
